ACM30122 Certificate III in Animal Care Services provides the skills and knowledge to work in a broad range of roles in animal care facilities and services, including boarding/day care, breeding, shelters, pet grooming, pet sitting and other animal businesses. This is the ideal foundation course for people looking to move into specialised streams in the animal care industry and is also a natural progression for those who have already completed a Certificate II qualification in a related field.

Students enrolled in this course have a choice of two specialisations:

  1. Animal Care specialisation
  2. Pet Grooming specialisation
  3. Customer Service specialisation

Students must select their specialisation at the point of enrolment.

The Animal Care sector in Australia is experiencing significant growth, contributing in excess of $12 billion to the Australian economy annually and employing more than 50,000 workers. The industry continues to see strong growth in areas such as pet grooming, animal health care, and the nursing, rehabilitation and treatment of animals. There are a wide variety of emerging long term career pathways in assistance, companion and therapy animals, animal rescue and captive animal management.

Key tasks and functions this qualification will prepare you for include:

  • Carrying out daily health care requirements of animals
  • Understanding animal health management practices and how to monitor animal health
  • Nutritional planning for a range of animal species
  • Safely and correctly handling and restraining animals in a variety of situations
  • Providing behavioural management and enrichment for different animal species
  • Implementing infection control policies and procedures in animal care workplaces

*Please note that Traineeship students undertaking the Animal Care Specialisation complete ACMGEN308 Walk and exercise dogs instead of ACMSPE322 Provide general care of rodents or rabbits.

The Australian Qualifications Framework  determines that the duration of this qualification is 1 – 2 years, however with both face-to-face training, and flexible online learning, learners are typically completing within the first 6 – 12 months. How quickly an individual is able to complete the course will depend on how fast they work through the content, their commitment to learning and their level of competence.

To achieve the best practical experience from this course it is recommended that you work in an environment where you can use the skills learnt. This is not a pre-requisite for the course.

Learners not employed in a suitable animal care service undertake vocational work placement and need to locate a suitable animal care facility that they can access to complete their practical assessments. Most students should expect to be able to complete their practical assessments in a suitable workplace environment within 60 hours. Contact us for further details and information.

Requirements

  • Access to a computer with word processing, email, Zoom/other, PDF reader capabilities and a reliable internet connection
  • Language, literacy and numeracy (LLN) levels that indicate you have a high probability of being able to successfully complete the course. Skills Generation can help assess your current LLN levels as required to ensure we are able to effectively support you
  • Ability to allocate appropriate study hours per week
  • Ability to undertake practical tasks and assessments in an animal care facility

The Commonwealth Government requires all learners undertaking nationally recognised, accredited training courses to have a Unique Student Identifier (USI).  Learners are unable to enrol without their USI.

If you are currently working, or have previously worked in a relevant industry, you may be eligible for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). RPL applies where you have workplace experience/competency that can be formally assessed against the units of competency in this course. If you wish to undertake an RPL process, please discuss with our Student Services enrolments team.

Funding and Fees

This course currently attracts government funding for eligible students. Students who access funded training pay a co-contribution fee that represents a small fraction of the total course fee!

Students who are not eligible for subsidised training pay the full course fee.
