World Environment Day 2024 #GenerationRestoration

Land Restoration is crucial for achieving global sustainable development goals. This World Environment Day we are reminded to reflect on the importance of reviving and restoring our earth for future generations, and to think about ways we can support and engage in the process of Land Restoration, Ending Desertification and improving Drought Resilience.

Land degradation poses significant challenges worldwide. With an estimated 25 per cent of the Earth’s land surface being affected, activities like deforestation, unsustainable agricultural practices, urbanisation and mining contribute to land degradation. As a result, nature experiences ecological imbalance, and humanity faces the loss of vital ecosystem services that support our well-being and livelihoods. We can’t turn back time, but  the good news is there are things we can do to restore a healthy landscape.

World Environment Day 2024 focuses on ways we can achieve restoration through growing forests, reviving water sources and bringing back soils. Halting degradation and rehabilitating degraded land through activities like reforestation, soil conservation, and the protection of natural processes enhances biodiversity, restores ecosystem services, and mitigates climate change impacts.

As individuals we might wonder how we can contribute in a meaningful way.

We may not be able to plant a forest on our own, but we can plant a tree. Trees provide food and oxygen. They help save energy, clean the air, and help combat climate change.

The Skills Generation Sustainability Initiative ‘Office Plant Competition’ has been a fun way to engage our team in a collective plant growing activity that is contributing to our sustainability goals. We chose to plant tomato seeds to green our workspace, produce powerful little oxygen generators, and hopefully produce some delicious nutritious fruit!

 Happy World Environment Day!
