Students gain full 25kg Remote Pilot Licence flying the DJI Matrice M600 Pro with UAV Skills

With UAV Skills recent acquisition of a DJI Matrice M600 Pro they can now offer upgrades to the CASA Remote Pilot Licence (RePL) from the standard basic 7kg Restricted Multirotor class to the full Small Class of 25kg.

In its first outing, six students from the Brisbane North West Trade Training Centre put the M600 Pro through its paces and successfully passed their 25kg RePL Practical Flight Competencies. The very next day six students from Ferny Grove State High School took it flying and each successfully achieved their full 25kg Remote Pilot Licence.

UAV Skills Chief Pilot, Dave Baker, said that the students quickly adjusted to the much larger drone. “While the size and sound of the aircraft was daunting to the students at first, they soon came to realise it’s just as easy to fly as the smaller drones. Once they understood the need to accommodate for its increased stopping distances, they found the larger size and weight of 9.5kg made it a lot less wind affected,” he said.

For those who like stats, the M600 Pro:

  • stands 0.73m high
  • is 1.67m wide (to the tips of the propellers)
  • spins six 0.53m diameter propellers (21 inches)
  • weighs in at 9.5kg without payload (usually a cinematic camera)
  • has a maximum take-off weight of 15.5kg
  • will comfortably handle 30kph winds
  • has a maximum speed of 65kph

In October last year the Skills Generation AVI30419 Certificate III in Aviation (Remote Pilot) achieved status as an accredited Remote Pilot Licence (RePL) course, gaining formal approval by the Australian Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA).

Working in close consultation with CASA, Skills Generation undertook a rigorous process to incorporate and map CASA training requirements to AVI30419 ensuring the training resources include all CASA requirements as well as accredited qualification requirements.

As a result, Skills Generation is the only RTO in Australia to have their AVI30419 Certificate III materials approved by CASA as an approved RePL course. This successful collaboration between our training organisation and the industry regulator demonstrates the value and benefits that are derived from training and industry engagement and cooperation.

Students now benefit by having access to an accredited Certificate III course that embeds the RePL licence requirements and can enjoy a simplified and streamlined process to gaining both the AQF Certificate III and the Remote Pilot Licence in one learning journey with one provider.

Skills Generation sister company UAV Skills achieved RPA Operators Certificate (REOC) status through the approval process and is approved to conduct RePL training, theory and operations (Multi-rotor RPA up to 25kgs, Aerial work, in Australia). As a Training endorsed REOC, UAV Skills issues the Remote Pilot Licence to eligible students.
