Employment Opportunities

Start your career in Mental Health with this entry-level qualification. This course will give you the specialised skills and knowledge needed to work with people with complex needs in both community services and healthcare settings.

This qualification is relevant to a wide range of job roles in the community services and health sector, in non-clinical mental health services and in community services and health roles more broadly such as community centres, youth services, employment agencies, counselling and domestic and family violence services. It can also enhance existing qualifications and job roles such as clinical mental health, policing and other public-facing roles in the public, private and not-for-profit sectors.

Growth in the mental health sector is strong with the Australian Government expecting to see more than 50,000 job openings in the next five years.

Mental health is key to overall health and wellbeing. In any year in Australia, around 1 in 5 people aged 16 – 85 will experience a mental health disorder. Mental health is affected by multiple socioeconomic factors, including a persons’ access to services, living conditions and employment status, and affects not only the individual but also their families and carers. Mental health and physical health are also related. People with mental illnesses are more likely to develop physical illness and tend to die earlier than the general population.

A range of mental health related services are provided in Australia, including:

  • clinical mental health services, such as government funded public health services, psychiatrists and psychologists
  • non-clinical mental health services such as community-based organisations in the charities and not-for-profit sector

This qualification addresses the non-clinical aspects of mental health service provision and has relevance to anybody who works with people with mental health issues, whether in a specialised mental health service or as part of the broader community services and health sector.
